Teach Yourself Piano: Tips for Success

If you can teach yourself a new skill, why pay for the assistance of an instructor you may not need? There are few things as satisfying as developing a new skill on your own.  Enjoy the self confidence that comes with self education all while you teach yourself piano. Success is possible, and without spending a fortune or hours driving to and from a music school for lessons with a pricy instructor.

Free Instructional Videos

The internet is full of free resources, if you know where to look. You can teach yourself piano while watching others play. Video lessons are a great way to get started. Plus, they give you not just the audio aspect but the visual as well. Observe as seasoned musicians show you step by step how to practice and form good habits. The best part is you can watch each video over and over again. They even include a pause feature so you can stop the lesson if you need a moment to catch up.

Group Learning

If motivation is a concern, consider having a friend join you as you teach yourself piano. Not only will each lesson be more entertaining with good company, but you and your friend can enjoy bonding through learning. Help each other out by answering questions. Perhaps your strengths and weaknesses will compliment each other so you can assist or be assisted when needed. Just remember to make sure your playing partner has patience, and you offer patience in return.

On the other hand, if you know someone who already plays, find out if they will help you. You may be able to get lessons from someone who knows what they are doing for free! Not just video lessons, but in person lessons that allows for quick question answering!

Books and Learning Software

Many companies and music schools have produced books and educational software to help you teach yourself piano. Make sure you do the research before purchasing one. These can get costly, but usually offer many resources. Make sure your chosen software or book comes with an online resource that offers a social learning feature. This usually comes in the form of a chat room or forum that you can ask other students or teachers questions, or even an email address to contact an instructor.

Also make sure that each comes with plenty of easy to use visuals, and audio as well. These will help you understand each step of the way. Other optional resources may be included and can add to the experience and likeliness for success. You can teach yourself piano and still gain just as much knowledge as someone who attends a guided class.

Never expect a new skill to come easily. You will still have to practice and work through material regardless of what method you choose to learn by. Rest assured you can teach yourself piano, if you are willing to put in the time and effort. Do not put off your dream of becoming a musician, even if it is only as a hobby. You can start to teach yourself piano right away with any one of the many available resources!
